Delhi Awakens to Toxic Smog After Diwali
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" range.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Several parts of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, equating to 15-20x higher than acceptable standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and Current Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous haze that engulfs the capital as winter sets in.
Nevertheless in recent months, the current regional government approached the supreme court to request a easing of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

The widespread use of firecrackers during the festival also sparked a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in India following the festivities.
Long-Standing Pollution Problem
The dangerously high concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a serious challenge for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the levels of dangerous particles in the air has been found to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Sources
The situation in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air descends.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.
This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.
Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early fatalities annually in the city.
